Mensa Survey 2014 – what has changed since then?

At the different university locations, the Student Services conducts regular surveys about the student canteens. We do this in order to find out what our guest like and what we could do even better. Accordingly, we have been working with the market research institute Conomic since 2014.

In November 2014, a comprehensive online survey took place at the locations of Braunschweig (Mensa 2), Clausthal-Zellerfeld and Wolfenbüttel. More than 3,000 students and employees from the three locations followed our call and participated. Inter alia there were questions about the time-of-use of  the mensa, the quality of the food, the service and the premises of the respective mensa.

What is the outcome?

This is a summary of the results and the first measures at the mensa of Wolfenbüttel:

In Wolfenbüttel, the wish for bigger portions was especially pronounced. That is why we carefully examined the distributed amounts and observed that they are in accordance with the portion sizes generally distributed by the Student Services. Unfortunately, it is not possible to have a special solution for each location. However, at the salad- and dessert buffet our guests have the chance to determine the size of their portions individually.

Furthermore, the respondents were of the opinion that there was need for optimisation in regard to waiting times and available space (seats, etc.). We examined these two points as well: as there is no option to add another part of building, from our point of view an improvement would only be possible by an adjustment of the break times (staggered break times). Thus, the use would be spread better. Unfortunately,  the Student Services has no bearing on that.

We also went into the matter of waiting times and stopped them off: in peak periods where there are long queues, the waiting time amounted to 4-5 minutes. A reduction of this time is not possible at reasonable expense and thus not workable for us.

In regard to the opening hours a detailed analysis has shown that an extension would not make sense in regard to business considerations due to under-utilisation. Accordingly, the opening hours will not be modified at the moment. On the whole, we were already very content with the assessment of all surveyed canteens, but we could also determine important issues that we can improve. We hope that one or the other notable improvement has occurred due to some of the measures already taken.

Lately, the second survey took place at the locations of Hildesheim, Holzminden, Lüneburg and Suderburg. After evaluation we will publish the results on our website.
